7 Questions with Indira and Carlson of La Souce Environmental Designs

It’s Black Friday, but don’t let the superstition get the better of you, it’s all about positivity! Remember? What you think, is what you become, so guard your thoughts and guard them well!

We’re soo very proud of you that you made it through another week! We know it must have been spectacular and you made it count. Even with all the challenges, we’re sure there were several highs to trump those difficult moments.

Today we are excited to showcase another pair of our awesomely talented and passionate T&T entrepreneurs! We caught up with Indira and Carlson of La Souce Environmental Designs. You can check out their interview here:

1. Tell us in 5 words who Indira and Carlson is.

We might need 10 words for this because we are so opposite in many ways. But we are both hardworking, dedicated, consistent, passionate and well-organized

DSC036682. What is the genesis of your business? Why the name La Souce? How long have you been in business, how did you get started and why?

Carlson and I met (and fell in love) in the food industry. We had both been working in corporate T&T for many years, Carlson for over 15 years, and he had become disenchanted with the systems and people there. We knew for awhile that we wanted to start our own business and not continue working for someone else the rest of our lives. About one year after we got married, in 2008, Carlson left his job and we officially registered La Souce.

La Souce is actually French patois and is the name given to the estate we currently live on in St Ann’s. This name was chosen by Carlson’s grandfather, who spoke French Patois, when he was alive. He was the original “green thumb” in the family. He planted and cared for all the fruit and vegetable trees on the estate and Carlson grew up learning the tricks of the trade from him. When we started the company we named it “La Souce” in honour of him.

Carlson grew up rearing fish and other animals as a hobby. He also designed and built the habitats for these animals, mostly through trial and error. This is where his love for designing and building ponds and water features began and it is out of his passion for this work that we started the business.

3. What are some of the services you provide?

We do all landscaping activities such as lawn cutting, tree trimming, pruning hedges and plants, etc. We design, build and repair ponds and water features. We also rent plants and water features for events such as, weddings and graduations, as well as corporate functions. Most recently we started giving landscaping workshops for beginners and hosting “GreenThumbTT” networking events.

Being asked to work on some high profile client’s properties
Our landscaping workshops for beginners
Our GreenThumbTT networking event

5. What are some challenges thus far?

Our biggest challenge has been and continues to be labour. We find it difficult to find employees with the correct work ethic. Our experience has been that some people are not willing to work and for the most part want “handouts”. Another challenge has been financing, banks are very hesitant to lend money to entrepreneurs. Additionally, marketing the business using traditional methods such as radio and newspapers is another expense that is challenging. So we have been very creative in the way we market the company.

DSC058166. What do you want more than anything in the world when it comes to business?

Being able to do what we want ALL of the time. People think having your own business means you get to do what you want anytime, but that’s not true. For example, if we could work with ponds and water features all the time would be great, but we have to also do the other aspects of the business, such as landscaping, rentals, etc. to bring in the income.

7. What is your advice to other entrepreneurs?

There are so many clichéd things we could say…but we will not, instead we will tell you things people didn’t tell us…
Be prepared to work more hours when you have your own business than when you are working for someone else. Always be persistent…put in the time and effort. Keeping thinking outside the box and looking for ways to make your business stand out from your competitors. And always have a back-up plan.
